Peaceful evening, sky full of bright shiny stars, magnificent scarlet moon, time to time shooting stars. I was on call, sitting in front of hospital with hot African tea in my hand, chatting with nurse Rebecca, breastfeeding her youngest, Sebo. My second hand was holding small Josephine. She was sitting on my knees, cheerfully licking up her lollipop.
Our peace of heaven has been disturbed by emergency case. 11 months old Kevin.
Kevin was admitted as a complicated malaria, serious pneumonia, respiratory distress, high fever and anemy. He was about to pass out in any minute, for sure. We quickly put this cutie on intravenous antimalarial therapy, antibiotics high doses, glucose, hydrocortisone, oxygenotherapy, we provided emergency blood transfusion, and started freqent check up on him, day&night.
Thanks God, incredible South Sudanese blessing, and intravenous drugs for sure, Kevin overcame the worst stage of malaria in few days. Anyway, one challenge has been left, complicated pneumonia.
South Sudan reality. For treating kid's pneumonia we have rather three choices.

Penicillin intramuscular, Ceftriaxon intravenous, Amoxicillin per oral. Imagine. Just three antibiotics (and very basic ones) for the second most common disease in this country. In our countries? Minimum 33 obtions we have ...
In Kevin's case, we met even another problem.
His buttock was too small for intramuscular injection of Penicillin, Cefriaxon we run out in hospital completely for this month, and Amoxicillin capsules he was not able to swallow due to his serious condition (he couldn't even breath without an oxygen).
We were struggling for so many days with this beautiful Gods art. Finally, after two weeks of daily check up 24/7, great cooperation with parents, willing to go by foot for kilometers to village's market just to buy drugs for kid (despite of being poor bush family), thanks to Gods blessing too, we overcame this ugly sickness and at last, Everyday, we deal with the worst diagnoses I have ever seen. The worst conditions, cruel pain, missing body parts, gunshots, children in coma...

Kevin has started to laugh again.
In bush. In bush hospital with missing drugs, missing educated personal, missing sanitary material. Tough life, but amazingly strong people. Without crying and hysteria they survive generalized burns, when during sleep their house set on fire and all family including toddlers get burn. Without crying when your husband beat you pregnant with metal bar. Without complaining when as 11 years old girl you go for water, group of boys assault and beat you till unconsciousness. Without single tear drop after baboon, hyena, scorpion or snake bite, without swearing if you got beaten by machete. We are witnesses of daily miracles. When unconsciousness child wake up after 4 days in coma, when 18 years old survived after head gunshot, which removed third of his brain and eye, when kid survived cutting the head by witch doctor in bush, when mother of twins survived delivery with hemoglobin 17g/l, when we saved kid who was not urinating for 2 wks....
